Laboratory diagnostic testing is an important part of caring for your pet. Thorough bloodwork is often necessary when a pet is ill or injured. Obtaining quick and accurate results allows our doctors to put together a tailored treatment plan for your pet sooner, increasing the chances of a successful recovery. West Park Animal Hospital is equipped with a full-in house laboratory in our Westchase office where we can perform a number of diagnostics tests and have results available the same day, which is especially important when one of our family members is experiencing an emergency.

First line bloodwork such as blood chemistry and complete blood count can offer a wealth of information, but will not be able to screen for every possible illness. At West Park Animal Hospital, it is our goal to create a unique diagnostic plan for each patient. Based on your pet’s history and a thorough physical exam, our doctors may recommend additional specialized testing for your pet with one of the many reference laboratories we have access to.

While we commonly think of diagnostic testing in our ill pets, it can benefit healthy pets as well. The results of certain laboratory tests for healthy pets are used to establish a wellness baseline. This wellness baseline can then be referenced at future visits to determine if there are changes consistent with a health problem. There are even screening tests designed exclusively for senior patients to check for certain conditions more common in older pets such as diabetes, kidney and thyroid disease. Diagnosing these diseases early gives your pet a strong advantage and often results in better response to treatment which means a longer healthier life.
